Here are today's ballroom dance terms:
Poise: One's overall appearance and composure.
Rhythm dances: Dances that are primarily performed in one area of the dance floor and do not require that the body move in one specific direction around the dance floor. The ballroom dancing then is done through body motion. These dances are: Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Mambo, Merengue, Swing, Disco, Paso Doble, and Rumba Bolero.
Smooth dances: Dances that primarily progress (travel) counter-clockwise around the dance floor. There is no body motion in these dances and the emphasis is on body flight. These dances are: Fox Trot, Waltz, Tango, Polka, Viennese Waltz, Quick Step, and Peabody.
